Se p 20 01 Bose - Einstein Condensation of Trapped Atomic Gases
نویسنده
چکیده
This article reviews recent investigations on the phenomenon of Bose-Einstein condensation of dilute gases. Since the experimental observation of quantum degeneracy in atomic gases, the research activity in the field of coherent matter-waves literally exploded. The present topical review aims to give an introduction into the thermodynamics of Bose-Einstein condensation, a general overview over experimental techniques and investigations, and a theoretical foundation for the description of bosonic many-body quantum systems.

Bose-Einstein Condensation in Dilute Atomic Gases
The material presented here consists of lecture notes written for a five two-hour sections course given during the 2004 edition of the Brazilian School on Statistical Mechanics. The topics covered are 1. Bose-Einstein condensation of trapped ideal gases; 2. Effective two-body interactions and exact results in the Gross-Pitaevski limit; 3. Atomic structure effects, including “Feshbach resonances...
متن کاملPrincipal problems in Bose-Einstein condensation of dilute gases
A survey is given of the present state of the art in studying Bose-Einstein condensation of dilute atomic gases. The bulk of attention is focused on the principal theoretical problems, though the related experiments are also mentioned. Both uniform and nonuniform trapped gases are considered. Existing theoretical contradictions are critically analysed. A correct understanding of the principal t...
متن کاملAtom lasers and phase coherence of atomic Bose gases
Using continuous radio-frequency waves a coherent beam of atoms can be extracted from a magnetically trapped gaseous Bose-Einstein condensate. These novel atomic beams have matter-wave properties that are very similar to those of laser light in classical optics and are therefore called atom lasers. Furthermore, coupling out atoms from a Bose gas allows one to probe the dramatic changes in the p...
متن کاملBose-Einstein condensation of ultracold atomic gases
Bose-Einstein condensation in a dilute gas of sodium atoms has been observed. The atoms were trapped in an optically plugged magnetic trap or in a cloverleaf magnetic trap. Rf induced evaporative cooling increased the phase-space density by six orders of magnitude. We summarize the different techniques used, and discuss recent studies of properties of Bose condensates with an outlook on future ...
